September 22, 2010 - Local Artisan Contributes Statue Dedicated to Veterans
“Grace” to Become Prominent Feature at Thornton Veterans Memorial
Sculptor Christopher Romero, well known for his works seen across the Denver metro area, announced he will donate his latest work as a contribution to the Thornton Veterans Memorial project.
Titled “Grace”, the nearly four-foot tall statue of a winged angel releasing a dove with dog tags is an extraordinarily moving piece of artwork. Grace’s outstretched arms symbolize the release of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to this nation. The dog tags carried aloft by a dove provide a visual and emotional representation of those brave men and women.
In announcing the contribution Mr. Romero said, “This is simply about doing what is right to honor our nation’s veterans. Grace belongs at this memorial and I am pleased that she will have a home honoring heroes.”
Romero’s contribution of the sculpture is valued at $12,000 and the Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation will be funding the casting and molding estimated at $4,500.
The initial stages of work on “Grace” have been completed and the sculpture is now at the foundry where it will be rendered in bronze, a process estimated to take 90 days. Once complete the statue will be placed with the other features of the Thornton Veterans Memorial located near 136th Avenue and Holly Street.
“Grace will be a central feature of the Thornton Veterans Memorial and adds a human element that quite literally brings tears to your eyes,” Tony Hake, chairman of the foundation said. “On behalf of all veterans we thank Mr. Romero for the generosity he has shown in sharing Grace with the community.”
August 18, 2010 - Mark your calendars and join us for Thornton's September 11th Remembrance Ceremony. September 11, 2001 is a date which is forever etched in the memories of all Americans. The events of that horrible day serve as a reminder of the vigilance that we must maintain to defend our nation and the sacrifices that have been made to keep us safe.
In the wake of the attacks, each year the President of the United States designates September 11th as Patriot Day – a day of remembrance to ensure we never forget the men and women who died on that fateful today. This year we invite everyone to please join us on the 9th anniversary of the attacks at the City of Thornton’s September 11th Remembrance Ceremony.

July 26, 2010 - Letters of support for the Thornton Veterans Memorial sought
Dear friends,
It is a very exciting time for the Thornton Veterans Memorial! As you have heard, construction is underway on the first phase of the memorial that will soon be completed. The new location near 136th and Holly is perfect when coupled with the Adams 12 Five Star School District Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. It has provided us an opportunity to start construction much sooner than what would otherwise be possible.
This is just the start though! This first phase is relatively minimal compared to what we envision for honoring our nation’s veterans and we need your help!
The Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation will be applying for an Adams County Open Space grant at the end of this month. The funds from this grant, if received, would allow us to push forward with a much more substantial second phase of construction by the end of the year. The foundation is pulling out all the stops in our efforts to secure these funds as we prepare our application.
One thing the open space advisory board loves to see with an application is community support. This is where you come in! We are gathering up letters from every organization, business and individual we possibly can for inclusion with our application. This small measure may be crucial to our success.
To that end, we are asking each and every one of you to write a personal letter of support. We further ask that you ask your friends, families and co-workers to write one as well. It doesn’t matter whether they live in the area or not.
At the bottom of this message is a link to a sample letter we created. Feel free to use that to guide what you write or throw it out the window and write your own from scratch. The letters don’t need to be long or detailed – just personal accounts as to why you support the project, what it means to you, etc.
We need these letters within the next week; please write your own and ask others to as soon as possible. You can email them to info@thorntonveteransmemorial.org as an attachment or simply as an email. If you could include your address that would be ideal.
Thank you very much for your continued support of our project and of veterans!
July 8, 2010 - Construction underway on the first phase of the Thornton Veterans Memorial! Center pentagon, flag poles and inlaid star with donor paver bricks mark start of long-needed memorial to our nation’s veterans.
It has been years in the making and thanks to the contributions of area businesses, civic organizations, individuals and the City of Thornton, the Thornton Veterans Memorial is becoming a reality. In the past two weeks preparation of the earth was completed and the foundation for the memorial was poured. The center pentagon is also taking shape and the project is moving along at lightning speed.
What is being built at the current time is but the first phase of what will be one of the premier veterans memorials in the state. We still need your help! To complete the memorial as it is currently envisioned, contributions from the community are still very much needed.
Larger organizations and businesses may be interesting in becoming a sponsor of the memorial. The benefits of the sponsorship program include naming recognition of features and much more. Please contact us if you are interested for complete details.
Remember that as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, your contributions to the Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation are tax deductible!

President Bush has issued a proclamation naming Monday, May 26, 2008, Memorial Day, a day of prayer for permanent peace. In part the proclamation reads:
Throughout our Nation's history, our course has been secured by brave Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. These courageous and selfless warriors have stepped forward to protect the Nation they love, fight for America's highest ideals, and show millions that a future of liberty is possible. Freedoms come at great costs, yet the world has been transformed in unimaginable ways because of the noble service and devotion to duty of these brave individuals. Our country honors the sacrifice made by those who have given their lives to spread the blessings of liberty and lay the foundations of peace, and we mourn their loss.
Today, our service men and women continue to inspire and strengthen our Nation, going above and beyond the call of duty as part of the greatest military the world has ever known. Americans are grateful to all those who have put on our Nation's uniform and to their families, and we will always remember their service and sacrifice for our freedoms.

November 28 , 2007 - Adams County Social Services looking to help military families. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan present military personnel and their families with financial, emotional and family relationship challenges. The Adams County Social Services Department seeks to serve these families through its Military Family Assistance Program.
Army Sergeant Eddie Jeffers wrote a letter to the editor back in February and in it he said, “Even thousands of miles away, in Ramadi, Iraq, the cries and screams and complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year, I will be thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn’t fit your average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the streets of America, and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the same people who compare our President to Hitler.”
Sadly, Sergeant Jeffers won’t be walking down the streets of his hometown in a year. At the young and tender age of 23, on September 19, 2007, he was killed in Iraq. He paid the ultimate sacrifice – not only for Americans, but for those that aspire to be like us. He did this despite believing that he would not be appreciated.
And what about those that do come home from this war and those that have from previous ones? What about those without limbs? Those with scars earned on the field of battle? And what about those that bear scars beneath the skin that aren’t visible – the kinds of scars that will come to life in nightmares every night for the rest of their lives?
When their time in the service is over and they try to piece together what's left of themselves, will we be there as a nation to lend a hand? What will we do to help those that have spent years dodging death and those that cradled comrades as they died? Will we honor them and will we help them? Will we turn our backs? Are they simply something to be ashamed of like some odd kind of urban blight that we dare not look at and want to hide from public view? Will we not at least take this one day a year to honor them?
All too often the soldiers, the Marines, the sailors and the airmen stand alone. They stand when others are unwilling or unable. They answer the call to serve while others turn a deaf ear.
God and the Soldier, we adore,
In time of danger, not before.
The danger passed and all things righted,
God is forgotten and the Soldier slighted.
— Rudyard Kipling
We dishonor all veterans when we do not take the time to properly recognize our defenders on this, the one day set aside to ensure they are never forgotten. This Veterans Day let us not forget their sacrifices; let us not slight our veterans.

You can definitely tell the political season is upon us! Ballots are in the mail, candidates are out on the campaign trail, and soon you will be mailing in or turning in your ballots.
The Thornton Veterans Memorial wholeheartedly endorses the political process that represents the very cornerstone of this great nation. We are happy to see so many individuals willing to step forward and run for political office and serve the citizens of Thornton and we endorse all of their efforts. We also encourage everyone to take part in the election – VOTE!
Members of our Foundation are everyday citizens, business leaders, community leaders and yes, political candidates. All of these individuals are completely dedicated to our efforts to honor veterans, no matter who they are. We do need to say though that the Foundation endorses no one candidate over another. The Foundation has made it clear to all of its members and volunteers that any political activities they undertake are done so as a private citizen and not as a member representing the Thornton Veterans Memorial. Any comments they may make in the course of political efforts are their own and do not reflect the Foundation’s views. It is important that area citizens understand this.
The Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation never has and never will support one candidate for political office over another – that is not our place or our mission. We do however encourage you to exercise your right to vote - a right that has been provided by every veteran that has served, defended and even died, to protect. Educate yourself and learn about all the candidates and all the issues. Cast your ballot and vote for whom YOU determine to be the best candidate.
The Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation is a non-partisan, non-political, non-profit civic group dedicated to building a veterans memorial in the City of Thornton. We have that one goal and no other. It can be said that throughout the course of history in our country, no one group of people has done more to preserve this nation and protect its citizens than our veterans. We know that all of the candidates running for office in our city recognize the importance of ensuring our veterans receive the honors they are due and that no matter who is elected, they will continue to work to ensure this happens as all of the city of Thornton has in recent years.
We thank the citizens of the city of Thornton for their support of the Thornton Veterans Memorial project and we look forward to making this a reality for our veterans and Thornton. Please remember to honor our veterans by exercising one of your greatest liberties – VOTE!
Sincerely,
Tony Hake

December 15 , 2006 - The Thornton Veterans Memorial Featured On Your Hub. A recent article on YourHub.com discusses the recent decision to move the veterans memorial. Click here to read it.
December 4 , 2006 - The Thornton Veterans Memorial Is On The Move. After weeks of discussions and debating, the Memorial Foundation has made the decision to move the memorial to a different location. After the significant turn out for the Veterans Day ceremony, concerns were raised about the proposed location and its ability to properly support a large gathering.
The Foundation felt they had properly vetted the hilltop location at 139th & Colorado Boulevard over a year ago when it was chosen. However, after seeing the number of people that will be attending events at the memorial and given the limitations of the site, the city and the Foundation came to the conclusion that in the interest of ensuring the memorial is able to live up to its purpose, it has to move.
So where is the memorial going to be located? At a spot that many residents have voiced a preference for over the past year - near the Thornton Recreation Center at 110th & Colorado Boulevard.
Tony Hake, Chairman of the Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation said, “In a way, we are victims of our own success. The recent Veterans Day event and the extraordinary turnout and support really brought to our attention that the infrastructure at the old site wasn’t going to support the memorial and the types of activities we envision having there. This new location not only allows us plenty of room to hold events like Veterans Day and Memorial Day, it also allows us much greater flexibility in the memorial design, makes us part of a city destination, and puts us much closer to the population center of the city. The decision wasn’t easy but in the end we feel the new location serves the memorial’s purpose and the community much better.”
More details on the new location will be available in the coming weeks while we continue to work with the city on refining the location design. In the meantime, a press release with many more details about the move, the reasoning behind it, and why we feel it is a good thing is available. Please click here to read it. If you have any questions, please contact us.

"We expect Americans will see our decorated heroes unite in spirit at ceremonies, in parades and elsewhere as a compelling symbol of courage and sacrifice on Veterans Day, the day we set aside to thank those who served and safeguarded our national security."
VA is offering information about the campaign on its Web page, http://www.va.gov/veteranspride/, where veterans also can obtain information about how to replace mislaid medals and learn how to confirm the decorations to which they are entitled.
More information can be obtained below and from the VA's website. We certainly appreciate the publicity and all of the help we have received from the Sentinel but unfortunately there were some errors in the article. Please note our comments:
The headline refers to the Thornton Veterans' Memorial as a “tribute garden”. That is not what the memorial is to be called. In fact, that is the name of a memorial in a neighboring city.
The article states the memorial will be open on Memorial Day 2007. That is incorrect. No hard opening date has been set. We are however tentatively planning a ground breaking for Memorial Day 2007 and an dedication / grand opening on Veterans Day 2007.
The article says the service satellite monuments will have “painted scenes”. That is incorrect - nothing will be painted. The monuments will have quality bronze reliefs.
